Mr. Derek Beatty Obituary

Obituary

His Beginnings

Derek Rumon Beatty was an only child born on September 23, 1969, to Margaret Beatty Wiggins in Jasper, TX. Derek's monumental day of birth began a lifetime journey of a man who impacted people far and wide. Derek was preceded in death by his loving mother Margaret Beatty Wiggins, very special aunt Maggie Ruth, and uncle Garland McFarland.

His Religious Affiliations

At an early age, Derek accepted Jesus Christ and united with Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, TX. He later joined Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church where he worshiped until called home to be with his Lord and Savior. Throughout his illness, Derek's strong faith endured, never questioning the will of God. Derek will be remembered for his kindness, confidentiality, and ever-present words of encouragement.

His Education/Career

Derek graduated high school from the Kincaid School in Houston, TX, where he excelled academically and athletically.  He attended Texas Southern University (TSU) and graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Psychology and an Executive Master of Business Administration. While attending TSU, he served as President of the TSU Psychology Club.  His proudest memories of attending TSU were his pledge days. In the Spring of 1992, Derek became a member of the Beta Upsilon chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Derek loved and adored his Kappa Alpha Psi frat brothers, the Nupes.

After college graduation, Derek went on to work in Human Resources for several Fortune 500 companies including Baker Hughes, BP, Waste Management, and Amazon. At BP, Derek made many lifelong friends while serving as a Senior Talent Acquisition Manager.  Last year, Derek made his final career change, in his own words, to work for an “Amazing company”, Amazon. At Amazon, he was the North America Consumer Manager of Diversity Recruiting and loved adding value to underrepresented gender and minority groups.

Derek leaves a legacy of professionalism, love, and humor with his many colleagues, friends, and mentees.

His Life Well Lived

Derek met and later married Shaunda Lester, and from this union came the blessings of Dior (daughter) and Derek II (son). Derek was a devoted father who cherished every moment with his children. He lived his life to the fullest, enjoying international travel, great food, fine wine, and cocktails with family and friends. Derek was a man of great conversation, and his joyful disposition would always welcome others with open arms.  Wherever Derek was, his zest for life and impeccable style was infectious.

His earthly journey came to an end on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the tender age of fifty-two. He leaves to cherish his memories, two loving children Dior Beatty and Derek Beatty II; his father Bruce Wiggins; siblings Bruce Wiggins II (Cassie) and Brandon Wiggins; his aunts Linda Collins (Clinton) and Pamela Wiggins; his uncles Charles Beatty, Joe Beatty, and  Russell Wiggins; the Lester family and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and many dear and loving friendships that he blessed with wisdom, humor, and guidance. Very special acknowledgments to his beloved companion Jennifer Douglas, his BP family, and special friends Tonya Jackson, Johnny Palmer, James Blair, Carlos Thorne, Jason Thomas, Leslie Allen, the Forrest family, and the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
