Life’s Journey

Melvin Newell passed away peacefully in his home on December 31, 2019. Melvin was born in Wharton, Texas on October 10, 1932, to the late Jeff Newell and Julia Brown-Newell.

Melvin completed high school at St. Peter Claver Catholic School in San Antonio, Texas in May 1950. After he graduated, he attended Prairie View A&M University. Melvin was drafted in the United States Army in 1955. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Houston, Texas. He married his soulmate Jeanette Copeland May 9, 1969.

Melvin was employed with Consolidated Freight in Houston Texas for 40 years. When he retired, still determined to work he was employed by HISD as a bus driver for 10 years.

Melvin was a member of South Park Baptist Church where he served faithfully under the leadership of Rev. Marvin Delaney. He remained a faithful and active member until his health failed.

Melvin is proceeded in death by his parents Jeff & Julia Newell, grandson Jermaine, and great-granddaughter Bailey.

Melvin leaves to cherish his legacy his children, Melva (aka) Lisa, Michael (Belinda), Danny (Yolanda), Linda (Arnold), Jimmy, Glen, and Daphne; Sisters, Lydia (Kermit), Barbara, Betty, Rosalind and Diana; Brother, Roy, Eighteen grandchildren; Natalan (Derrick), Ebony, Erech, Montrey, Demetria, Jerrod, Danny, Keith, Kanetricia, Reginald, Adrian, Kennon, Michael, Nieman, Charles, Eddie, and Clinton along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, family and friends.
