Octave Vital Jr. entered eternal rest peacefully on Sunday March 8, 2026, in Houston, Texas. He was born along with his twin (his twin passed shortly after birth) on August 30, 1939, in New Iberia, Louisiana to the late Loretta and Octave Vital Sr. Thirteen children were born to this family that included three sets of twins.
At the age of 6 his parents moved the family to Houston, Texas fifth ward community. He attended Atherton Elementary School, E. O. Smith Jr. High, and he graduated from Kashmere High School. Octave was recognized as an outstanding football and basketball player. He was a student at Prairie View A&M College for three years prior to enlisting in the Army so that he could assist his mother financially. He was a kindhearted and generous man always available to help anyone in need. After three years of service in the Army, he returned to Prairie View A&M College where he received a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a master’s degree in education.
Octave began his career as a teacher/coach at Scarborough High School and Attucks Middle School; he retired from Gregory Lincoln Education Center. As a coach of football, basketball and track, his teams won many trophies. He dedicated 35 years of service to the Houston Independent School District. He made a lasting impact on the lives of countless students. Coaching was more than just a job to him, he believed in encouraging all of his students and athletes to work hard, do their best, and believe in themselves.
Octave met the love of his life when they were in the 10th grade at Kashmere High School. They continued going together in college and were referred to as “Tivo and Addie” because they were inseparable. They were united in Holy Matrimony in 1962. He was a loving and devoted husband. They were together 68 years.
Octave was a devout Christian, who accepted Christ as Lord and Savior. He raised his children in a Christian home. Octave was raised in Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church. He joined Brentwood Baptist church in 1970 where he was baptized. He became a deacon, sang in the choir, male chorus, participated in the Sunday school, and other activities until his health began to decline.
Octave’s greatest joys in life was spending time with his family, which included going to church, Sunday school, participating in church activities, and traveling. It became tradition for him to take his family on road trips every year. These trips created memories filled with laughter, adventure, singing, and togetherness. To him these trips were more than vacations, they were opportunities to bond and show his family the importance of making time for one another. As his family grew so did the tradition. He proudly continued these vacations with his grandchildren.
Octave loved sports, and enjoyed taking his family to games, as well as, watching games on tv. He made sure to attend his children’s extracurricular activities. He also attended his grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s events. He enjoyed playing cards, listening to music, and singing to his wife. He often visited his hometown, New Iberia, and he took immense pride in his Louisiana roots, especially eating creole food and listening to zydeco music.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife Addie, their three daughters, Jacelyn Vital-McPherson (Scott), Tiffany White (Jamail), and Octavia Vital (Glen). His grandchildren Scott McPherson (Joquetta), Marcus McPherson (Deionishia), Demarcus Sherman (Jasmine), Ashliegh Fobbs (Talia), Danielle Lathon-Sherman (Morgan), Omar Sherman III (Jediah), Kaitlyn Broussard, and Jordan Vital-Caldwell. Great grandchildren Ryan McPherson, Landen McPherson, Roc McPherson, Skylar Sherman, and Bryce Sherman. Two sisters, Leanna Vital Chambers and Harriett Vital, and a host of nieces and nephews.
