Ulysses J. Wicker, 80, of Rosharon, Texas, passed away on May 21, 2026, due to cardiac arrest and multiple debilitating health conditions that worsened over the years. Born on March 8, 1946, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to his mother Lena Maude Irving Gordon. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, John and Maude Kemp (deceased) of Greensburg, Louisiana. Ulysses lived a life defined by dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to those around him.
Ulysses proudly served eleven years in the United States Army, including two tours in Vietnam. His duty stations included Virginia, Germany, Alaska and Texas. His military service remained a source of deep pride throughout his life. After his years in uniform, he worked as a postal carrier for many years in Louisiana and Houston, Texas. A welder by trade, Ulysses channeled his skill and entrepreneurial spirit into founding Artistic Iron Works, which he operated successfully until his retirement. Beyond his professional endeavors, he enjoyed reading the Bible, welding, and jewelry making, pursuits that reflected his patience and craftsmanship.
Ulysses was a devoted member of both Alcoholics Anonymous and the Disabled Veterans Association. As a counselor for AA, he guided countless individuals on their journey to recovery, carrying with him 44 years of sobriety as a testament to his strength of character. He was a wise and patient man who treated everyone he met with respect and kindness. He always had a meaningful story to share, or a joke told at his own unhurried pace that never failed to bring laughter.
Baptized in church as a youth, Ulysses carried his faith quietly and steadily throughout his life. He often quoted the Serenity Prayer as his motto for living: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."
Ulysses is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara F. Wicker; his son, Bradley Wicker; and his granddaughter Shoibana Wicker. Sisters, Martha Wicker of California, Annette (Charles) Berry, Zenobia Campbell, Gloria Ann (John), Clarice Gordon, Leola Gordon (deceased), Lizzette Gordon, Forchie M. Brumfield; Brothers Herbert Ernest Gordon, Cleveland Gordon, Talmadge Gordon (deceased). Two stepsons, Christopher and Michael Fontenot. Two brothers in laws (Carroll and Frankie), two Sisters in laws (Linda and Winona). He had many step grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews who loved and respected their Uncle Wicker. One goddaughter (Lauren M. Roy).
A great provider, husband, father, and grandfather and friend, Ulysses now walks free from pain and sickness in the comfort of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He will be deeply missed and constantly remembered by all who were blessed to know him.
