A captivating and warm smile is one of the first things one would notice about Cheryl Cavitt. However, she was best known for her singing - a voice that was touched by God, and she used that voice to glorify Him. Naomi DeBose had no idea she was bringing a Songstress and Worshipper into the world when she gave birth to Cheryl Katrena on a warm Monday in 1958. It was July 21st to be exact. One can only imagine how proud her father, James DeBose, was to see his beautiful first-born child, not knowing that her small, sometimes loud cry would someday be melodious to the world. He was even more proud as he peered at her with excitement as Cheryl met him in heaven. Cheryl has composed and recorded gospel songs. She has belted out songs in places like small town Navasota, Texas to the continent of Africa; Cheryl sang to the world. Cheryl joined the Heavenly Choir on June 13, 2025, passing away into the "Bosom of Abraham" - She is now in the "presence of the Lord."
Antioch Missionary Baptist Church is where Cheryl was baptized early in childhood and where she eventually directed and led the youth choir. Antioch was home church for Cheryl for many years - growing up, becoming a young adult, getting married, and dedicating her children to God.
Cheryl was educated through the Houston Independent School District graduating from Evan E. Worthing High School in 1976 and continuing her secondary education as a music major at Texas Southern University (TSU). Though she met her husband, Leon Jr., at the age of 12 years, it was the car share rides to the universities (he at the University of Houston and she at TSU) that drew their friendship closer together and led to a marriage of forty-seven years. Who would have thought that her dad asking Leon to give Cheryl a ride to school would lead to Leon asking her dad to give him Cheryl as his wife? Cheryl and Leon were united in marriage on June 10, 1978. In addition to her former education at TSU, Cheryl also graduated from Jay's Beauty College, becoming a licensed Cosmetologist and she graduated from Houston Medical Institute, becoming a certified Medical Technician. She also owned and operated her own Child Daycare Business for many years; Ms. Cheryl's Daycare, providing love and care to many children in the Houston area. She also had her You-Tube Videos - Cheryl's Home Cooking! Cheryl was an amazing cook and she loved cooking for her family and friends!
Cheryl and Leon were blessed with four beautiful children who has blessed them with fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jason Leon Cavitt was Cheryl and Leon's oldest child. For a second, close your eyes and imagine being greeted at Heaven's Gates by your child - that's what we imagine happened with Cheryl because Jason preceded his mother in death. Christopher James Cavitt (Candice), Katrena Le'Chell Curtis (Kingdon), and Rebecca Rachelle Cavitt-Taylor (Rodney) are Cheryl and Leon's offspring, who along with Jason, as children added laughter into the home and as adults, with their spouses, blessed them with beautiful grandchildren: James (Naomi), Kaleb, Demarco, Christopher Jr., Chloe, Sariyah, Amiyaah, Kingdon Jr., Kaylee, Zionah, Kingdon III, Kingson William, Milan, and Amayah; and three beautiful great-grandchildren; Demazi, Johan, and Zaire. They all called her "Gammie".
Cheryl was the oldest of six children born to Naomi and James De Bose. Siblings: Monica Joseph (Gina Brown), Belinda Heard (Clarence), Sonya Carothers (Arnold), James DeBose (Trudy), and Tesha McCray (Brian). Cheryl was an amazing big sister who modeled strength, patience, tenacity, love, and ambition. She will be missed. Cheryl will also be missed by her three brothers-in-law John Lawrence, Alfred and Caster Cavitt. There are many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles who will miss Cheryl as well. We were all so blessed to have had this Amazing Virtuous Woman of God for almost sixty-seven years!
