Dorothy Ann Applewhite Jones, affectionately known as Dot and Pumpkin, was born to the late Benjamin Applewhite and Sarah Wright Applewhite on February 2, 1947 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She was the oldest of four children.
Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age. Upon her arrival in Texas, she became a member of Marlboro Heights Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She later became a member of Worldwide Church of God.
On February 27, 1965, Dorothy was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, Leroy Jones of Franklin Parish, Louisiana. No one could say his name as melodic as she could. They were married for 47 years. To this union, one child was born, Carolyn Lynette (Lyn).
Dorothy had a passion for educating children. She worked as a preschool teacher for over 30 years. The majority of those years were spent at Noah’s Ark Daycare in Angleton, TX where she developed lifelong friendships. Many of her students excelled in education becoming doctors and other professionals who attributed their love for education all the way back to Mrs. Jones.
Dorothy loved people and cared deeply about others. She loved to play cards while trash talking with her friends, listening to live music, going to concerts, and dancing. She also loved to be “right” in her debates with her family, thus earning the name “The Professor”. She also loved her grandson Brandon fiercely. When the doctor incorrectly proclaimed that he was going to be a girl by the ultrasound , she said nope! I know that God is going to bless me with a grandson and that HE did!
She is preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Jones, and her parents Benjamin and Sarah Applewhite and brother-in -love Daniel Wright.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Carolyn (Lyn) Jones of Fresno, Texas, bonus daughters Brinda Jones (Allen) of Monroe, Louisiana with whom she shared a close relationship, Anita Rena Perkins (Michael) of Stone Mountain, Georgia; grandchildren, Koleisha and Konstance Porter, Brandon White, Tyler Price; great-grandchildren, Kaigan, Kaylei and Kendalyn Porter; three sisters, Janet Wright (Daniel) of Springfield, Illinois, Nadine Busby (Bobby, Sr.) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Audrey Elaine Harvey (Robert) of Killeen, Texas; very close sister friends Yvonne Ross, Akua Fayette, Patricia Milligan and Debra Lucas; and a host of beloved nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
