Mrs. Erma J. Higgins

Erma Jean Higgins, 89, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, in Pearland, Texas. Born on July 17, 1936, in Village Mills, Texas. As the youngest of nine children, she lived a life deeply rooted in Christ, education, music, and devotion to her family. 

At an early age, she professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Brazoria, Texas.
 
Jean was the daughter of the late Dave and Susie York. She grew up in a close-knit family, preceded in death by her brothers Dave York Jr., Oscar York, Lessie York, Marshall York Sr., and her sisters, Bessie York, Erdist York, and Jessie York. She is survived by her brother Will York. 
A dedicated student and lifelong learner, Jean graduated from Charlie Brown High School before earning her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a focus on vocal music from Prairie View A&M University. She later earned her Master’s degree in Educational Administration and Professional Mid-Management Administration in 1979 from Texas Southern University. 

Jean’s passion for education extended far beyond the classroom. Throughout her 33 years as an educator, she was recognized for her excellence and commitment to student success, receiving numerous honors including Teacher of the Year Award (1984), the Principal’s Award for Service (1990), and recognition for Special Programs for the Improvement of Reading (1980 and 1981), among many others. She had a deep love for teaching and a lifelong passion for improving the next generation of children, dedicating her life to nurturing, guiding, and inspiring young minds, where her classroom slogan was, “Never say I can’t, say I’ll try!” 

Her love for music began early in life with the piano, an instrument that became central to her identity and expression. She was taught how to read music by her brother, a foundation that shaped her lifelong musical journey. Her talent and dedication were further displayed during her time at Prairie View A&M University, where she performed a senior recital featuring French songs, including Per la Gloria d’Adorarvi, O del mio dolce ardor, Alma del core, Pietà, Signor, Heidenröslein, Der Tod das ist die kühle Nacht, Die Lotosblume, and many more—a testament to her discipline, artistry, and love for vocal performance.

She served faithfully as a choir director and musician at New Hope Baptist Church (1971 - 1984) and Southwind Baptist Church (1985 - 1992). Her ministry through music enriched the spiritual lives of many and reflected her unwavering faith and devotion to God. She combined her love for music and passion for education through teaching piano lessons to many children and family members, as well as contributing to the Frost Elementary music department, Christmas programs, and Black History programs. 

Jean’s personal life was equally rich and meaningful. She shared a loving marriage of 66 years with her husband, Travis Higgins Sr. Together they raised four children: Michael Higgins (Anita), Travis Higgins Jr. (Rose), Karen Butler (late Lloyd), and the late Vonda Higgins. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Jessica Anderson, De'Ambra Unuigbey (Marcus), Maurika Higgins, Michelle Higgins, Dr. Travis Higgins III, Chase Butler, Joshua Higgins, Ivana Higgins—and numerous great-grandchildren who brought immense joy and pride to her life. 

In addition to her musical talents, educational devotion, and deep commitment to family, Jean will be remembered for her kind heart, giving spirit, and steady presence in the lives of those who knew her. She touched many lives through her encouragement, wisdom, and unwavering love.
