Mary Lillian Oreaboe Wells was born on August 27, 1947, in Houston, Texas, to Joseph Oreaboe, Jr. and Lillie Mae Malveaux. She grew up in the West End and Third Ward communities and attended St. Nicholas Catholic School and Jack Yates High School, graduating in 1965. She later attended Texas Southern University, where she met and fell in love with Lester Ray Wells. Two children were born to this union: Chelsea Denise Wells and Lester Ray Wells Jr.
Mary lived a life rooted in faith. She was a longtime member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and later St. Mary’s Catholic Church. In 2006, she became a devoted member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as President of the “We Care Ministry” until her passing. Her dedication, compassion, and willingness to serve others touched countless lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Jacqueline Gould. Mary leaves to cherish her memory her children, Chelsea Lennox (Richard) of Manvel, Texas, and Lester Wells Jr. of Houston; her beloved grandsons, Kelvin Lennox, Joshua Mason, and Jason Lennox; her great-granddaughters, Evette Marie, Liliana Denise, and Layton Maire; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends. Mary’s legacy is one of love, strength, and unwavering faith. Her kindness, generosity, and warm spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
