Ruby Hazel Self, daughter of the late Cleo and Austin Cornelius Long, completed her remarkable 90-year journey on March 22, 2025. Born in Rusk County, Texas, Ruby was preceded in death by her beloved husband Silas and is survived by her siblings Hythia Young and Austin Cornelius Long, Jr.
A proud Prairie View A&M graduate, Ruby devoted her career to teaching special needs students at Anderson School in San Bernardino, California before settling in Houston, Texas. There, she became a cornerstone of The Church Without Walls, where her deep faith and generous spirit touched countless lives as "Sister Self." She filled her decades with joyful travels, creating memories across the country with Silas, family, and friends.
She leaves a legacy through her children Acquenda Boyd, Carlette White, and Carl Williams III; grandchildren; and many who became family through her love. The family extends special gratitude to her devoted caregiver Mosland Whittaker-Hunter of Divine Care For Senior Living, and the compassionate staff of Star of Texas Hospice.
"Well done, good and faithful servant" —Matthew 25:23
