A Beautiful Legacy
“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”
II Corinthians 5:8
Terry Lynn Benson was born August 4, 1964, to the proud parents of Clarence Henry and Erma Jean Benson in Houston Texas. She was baptized at an early age at True Light Missionary Baptist located on Hamilton and Cleburne under the leadership of Rev. E. L. Lott.
She was educated in the Houston Independent School District and graduated from Jesse H. Jones High School in 1984. She furthered her education at Elkins Institute as an Office Management Specialist.
Her employment journey began with Fondren Orthopedic Hospital in a variety of roles. From there, her love for children led her to work for many years as a private in-home childcare specialist. She also worked briefly with a number of Day Care Centers and as a Site Coordinator with Mentorscope Community Outreach. Terry was also employed at Varnett Charter School as a Teacher’s Aide, and later at Varnett Public School as a cashier.
Terry loved her church family and was active in church and community service. Although far too young to be called a senior, she loved attending the weekly LIFE 65 & Up Ministry. She was a member of the Restored Women’s Ministry, a regular Sunday School attendee, a past president of the Celebration Choir, and was a Vacation Bible School teacher.
For many years Terry was a member of the Donald Ray Edwards Heavenly Voices Community Choir.
Her strong family bonds and a sense of responsibility meant she was always involved in the planning and coordinating of the legendary Joubert & Semien Family Reunion. Terry was a “People person”. She never met anyone that she did not call a friend. Her smile and wave drew you in… and her love kept you near.
On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, Terry returned to the Lord and received her blessings of eternal life. She now joins her loved ones who proceeded her in death: her father Clarence Henry Benson; grandparents Champ and Verdie Benson, grandfather McGaffey Barzar, uncle Chester Benson, and life-long best friend Danette Pope.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her son Brandon Jerrod Benson, mother Erma Benson Trotty, grandmother Ida Mae Boyd, and sister Dedra Valencia Benson all of Houston Texas. Her uncles Arthur Benson, Joseph Barzar, Fred Barzar (Christine), Patrick Barzar (Teleola), Glenn Barzar (Delores), Earnest Barzar (Inga) and Timothy Barzar of Houston Texas and Billy Ray Benson (Mary) of Fort Worth Texas. Her aunts Virgie Mae Coleman, Carrie Mae Bogar, and Joyce Benson of Fort Worth Texas, Mildred Vickers and Terald Barzar of Houston Texas. She was loved and will truly be missed by a host of family and friends.
