Velma McCaskell was born on May 2, 1933 in Florence, Alabama to Olivia and Willard Gay. Velma moved to Gary Indiana where she studied at Purdue University and became a Registered Nurse. One of her favorite activities was singing in a band.
She later moved to Houston, Texas and worked at Methodist Hospital. After years of service as a nurse in Houston, Velma returned to Florence, Alabama and eventually became a caregiver for her mother.
Velma was a member of St. Joe Catholic Church. For 9 years she sang in the Shoals Praise and Worship Choir. She volunteered at the St. Vincent De Paul Help Center for 19 years. Velma was a “Prayer Warrior” often called upon by those in need of special prayer.
After becoming ill with cancer, Velma returned to Texas, where she battled cancer for more than two years.
She is preceded in death by her parents Olivia and Willard Gay.
Velma is survived by three children, Derrick McClinton (June) of Fresno, Texas, Yvettra Marshall of Gary, Indiana, and Frederick McCaskell of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Dustin McClinton of Fresno, Texas and Karmen McCaskell of St. Petersburg, Florida; one brother, Robert Bridgeman (Frances) of Cherokee, Alabama; one niece, Robin Bridgeman of Las Vegas, Nevada; along with a host of cousins, other relatives and close friends.
